Review Meet Mr. Mulliner
Oh, I absolutely adored Meet Mr. Mulliner! It's a delightful collection of short stories, a perfect example of P.G. Wodehouse's unparalleled comedic genius. I went into it knowing Wodehouse's reputation, but even so, I was completely charmed by Mr. Mulliner himself. He's such a wonderfully quirky narrator, holding court in the Angler's Rest pub and spinning these utterly improbable yet strangely believable tales about his eccentric relatives. It's not just the stories themselves, which are hilarious and often wildly imaginative, but the way Wodehouse crafts them. It's like a modern-day Canterbury Tales, with each anecdote a tiny masterpiece of wit and wordplay.
The "Canterbury Tales" comparison is apt because it highlights Wodehouse's masterful storytelling. We're immediately aware that Mulliner isn't always sticking strictly to the facts, and that's part of the fun! It's an invitation to simply enjoy the ride, to lose yourself in the ridiculousness of it all. Each story has this wonderful, slightly chaotic energy, bouncing from one outlandish situation to another with breakneck speed. The characters are wonderfully eccentric, each one a distinct and memorable creation. The dialogue is sharp, witty, and perfectly captures the essence of upper-crust British humor. I found myself chuckling constantly, often outright laughing.
While the stories are self-contained, there’s a lovely continuity running through some of them. Certain characters reappear, adding another layer of enjoyment as their personalities unfold and their predicaments intertwine. It's not essential to follow the narrative threads, but it adds a nice richness to the overall experience. The recurring motifs, like the hilariously potent concoctions in the Buck-U-Uppo stories, only enhanced the comedic effect. Seriously, those stories alone are worth the price of admission.
I did listen to the audiobook, and while the narration wasn't quite the classic performance I'm accustomed to from other Wodehouse adaptations, it still delivered the humor exceptionally well. It perfectly captured the tone and pace of the stories. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that a few of the printed versions I've seen seem to suffer from some typographical issues. However, this is a small price to pay for the sheer entertainment value of these stories.
Ultimately, Meet Mr. Mulliner is a joyful read (or listen). It's the perfect escape for anyone who appreciates clever writing, witty dialogue, and stories that are both silly and surprisingly heartwarming. It's a book I'll undoubtedly revisit many times in the future, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good laugh, a bit of escapism, or simply a taste of classic English humor at its finest. Five stars from me!
